Known as the "grown-up" behind the stunning stock-market success of Yahoo, Koogle led the
Internet portal to its first profitable year in 1998 ($50 million on $203 million in revenue),
upped the number of monthly users to 50 million (more than the number of people who watch ER),
and in January acquired home-page provider GeoCities in a stock swap valued at $3.6 billion.
Wall Street responded by driving up Yahoo's market capitalization from about $4 billion one year
ago to a high of nearly $42 billion. The surge helped set off widespread skepticism about the
valuations of Internet stocks. The charismatic Koogle rebuts doubters with estimates of total
Internet advertising revenue soaring to $15 billion or more early next century from about $1
billion today.
