CEO's Who Listen
Jack Welch once approached my partner at a party and said: "Hey, aren't you the ones who
make a lot of trouble for companies?" When she said we were, he replied: "Well, if you have any
problems with my company, I want you to come to me." Now, that's the kind of executive you want
running a company. A CEO who is willing to hear the problem is also one who can usually find the
answer. A really great CEO can make a mediocre business valuable and a good business
tremendously profitable. Before Welch got there, GE had blown the TV business, the computer
business, and the nuclear-power business. Today, GE is the only original Dow Jones company still
around. IBM is another example of what a CEO can do. Michael Jordan transmogrified Westinghouse
into an aggressive media company. Frank Cahouet is as much responsible for Mellon Bank today as
Mellon himself. As a shareholder-rights advocate, however, one thing I'd like to see in my
lifetime is an organization reflecting far greater female energy. In a global world, where the
power of business has become so large, we need leaders with restraint, a wider vision, a more
holistic outlook.

CEO's Who Listen
(Michael
